What's the difference between binary and ASCII?
The binary numeral system uses only two symbols, 0 and 1. It is the basic language of computers. ASCII is a character encoding standard that assigns numerical values to letters and digits (and some symbols) so that text can be represented in binary form. For all practical purposes, binary is the language of computers; ASCII is just a way to encode text so that it can be processed by computers.
Why is ASCII restricted to 7 bits?
Because computers in those days were more restricted with regard to memory and processing power, ASCII was developed. Consequently, choosing 7 bits for ASCII encoding made possible the representation of a total of 128 different characters. That seemed to be enough, not only for all English letters and numbers but also for symbols such as punctuation marks. At the time, this was a practical decision, but it is no longer so with extended ASCII sets and Unicode.
Does ASCII have characters for all languages?
ASCII encoding is mainly for English text and a few basic symbols. In fact, extended ASCII sets and Unicode have been developed to accommodate characters from numerous languages and scripts. Using these encoding standards makes it possible for text in various languages to be represented.
